The convergence of decentralized finance (DeFi) and traditional banking infrastructure has spawned a new category of financial super-apps: the onchain neobank. Unlike conventional digital banks that merely digitized the user interface of fiat banking, crypto neobanks are rebuilding the entire financial backend using stablecoins and public blockchains. By 2026, this sector has entered a phase of intense competition, with three dominant players Superform, Veera, and Tria emerging as the titans of the onchain banking revolution. Their battle is not merely about market share; it is a contest to define what money flow looks like in a globally connected, permissionless financial system.

What Exactly Is an Onchain Neobank?

An onchain neobank combines three elements that have traditionally been difficult to merge. The first is the power of DeFi: yield optimization, staking, and cross-chain swaps. The second is the user experience of traditional banking: a debit card you can swipe at Starbucks, instant payments, and cashback rewards. The third is blockchain abstraction: users never need to deal with gas fees, cross-chain bridge interfaces, or network switching complexities.

This distinction matters. A traditional neobank with crypto features—such as Revolut or Chime—operates through a licensed partner bank and offers only a thin crypto layer: buying a small selection of coins or viewing a crypto balance alongside a checking account. By contrast, an onchain neobank gives users self-custody of their private keys while delivering a seamless spending experience. You control your assets, yet you can spend crypto as easily as fiat, without worrying about which chain your USDC is on.

The sector has reached critical scale. By March 2026, the stablecoin market capitalization surpassed $312 billion, a year-over-year increase of approximately 50%. In 2025 alone, stablecoin transfer volume climbed to $33 trillion, exceeding the combined transaction volume of Visa and Mastercard. This infrastructure has made crypto-native neobanking not merely viable but increasingly inevitable.

The Three Titans: Superform, Veera, and Tria

By the end of 2025, three projects achieved significant transaction volume milestones, doing what MetaMask could not: converting cryptocurrency into real spending power without touching a centralized exchange. Each has pursued a distinct strategic path, and understanding their differences is essential to grasping the competitive dynamics of 2026.

A. Superform: The Yield Optimization Engine

Superform positions itself as the “savings account” for onchain finance. Initially targeting institutional investors in mid-2025, it has evolved into a platform that automates cross-chain deposits to vaults across seven or more chains. Its Total Value Locked (TVL) surged 300% in just six months, reaching $144 million by late 2025. Superform’s core strength lies in its SuperVaults, which automate yield strategies for both institutions and retail users. It serves as a secure, stable growth vehicle less flashy than its competitors but potentially more sustainable for long-term institutional adoption.

B. Veera: The Emerging Markets Powerhouse

Veera has pursued a browser-to-bank model, expanding to 4 million users across 108 countries by late 2025. Its primary target is emerging markets, where traditional banking penetration remains low but smartphone adoption is high. Veera offers staking, rewards, and upcoming debit cards, positioning itself as a comprehensive financial system rather than a single-purpose wallet. With its enormous user base and focus on underserved populations, Veera is the powerful outsider most likely to achieve mainstream adoption in regions where legacy banking has failed to deliver.

C. Tria: The Chain Abstraction Champion

Tria excels at what the industry calls chain abstraction making the blockchain invisible to the end user. By abstracting gas fees and cross-chain complexities, Tria enables frictionless spending with $1 million in daily transaction volume and an Annualized Run Rate (ARR) of approximately $20 million as of November 2025. The platform has over 150,000 users, but its growth trajectory suggests that number is poised to expand dramatically. Tria is best positioned for massive user adoption precisely because its UX requires no crypto knowledge whatsoever. A user simply spends, and the blockchain handles everything behind the scenes.

The Three Custody Models Shaping the Battlefield

The competition among onchain neobanks is not merely about features or user interfaces. The fundamental dividing line is custody: who holds the private keys to the underlying assets. This architectural choice determines everything from regulatory obligations to user risk exposure.

  • Self-Custodial Platforms: Assets remain in the user’s own wallet, while card and account services operate through compliant frameworks. The underlying crypto assets are entirely under user control. Representative projects include Tuyo, Gnosis Pay, and MetaMask Card.

  • Custodial Stablecoin Neobanks: The platform holds user assets on their behalf. Account opening is simpler and yield operations require less technical knowledge, but users bear platform credit risk. Representative projects include KAST, Plasma One, Wirex, and Juno.

  • Traditional Finance Giants Entering Crypto: Revolut is currently the only player to have achieved significant scale in this category, with 65 million users and $10.5 billion in cumulative stablecoin payment volume by the end of 2025. Its crypto operations are custodial and leverage traditional finance’s mature offline channels for broad reach.

Each model corresponds to genuine market demand. Founders can select the appropriate route by matching their target customer base, while users must weigh the trade-offs between control, convenience, and counterparty risk.

The Rise of Non-Custodial Financial Super Apps

The most significant trend in this sector is the emergence of what analysts call “non-custodial financial super apps”. These platforms do not merely offer one service; they aim to capture the entire financial lifecycle of their users. Success in this arena requires capturing high-velocity money flows, beginning with trading fees and borrowing interest, then expanding to spending and storing.

This evolution represents a fundamental shift from the first generation of fintech neobanks. Ten years ago, fintech neobanks improved the banking experience through mobile applications but did not change the underlying system of money flow. Today, crypto neobanks are attempting something deeper: reconstructing the operational tracks of saving, spending, increasing, and borrowing funds.

The technical infrastructure supporting this shift has matured rapidly. Card infrastructure provider Rain completed a $250 million Series C in January 2026 at a $1.95 billion post-money valuation. KAST, a leading crypto-native neobank, closed an $80 million Series A at a $600 million valuation, covering 170 countries with 1 million users. The entire infrastructure stack from payment clearing to compliance rails is now commercially operational, and platforms across the sector are entering a phase of aggressive scaling.

Features That Define the Onchain Banking Experience

The feature set of a competitive crypto neobank in 2026 goes far beyond simple crypto storage. The core value proposition rests on several pillars that collectively deliver a banking experience superior to what traditional institutions provide.

  • Instant Settlement: Blockchain-based clearing settles transfers in seconds rather than business days, with fees approaching zero.

  • High-Yield Savings: Annual percentage yields on stablecoin deposits range from 5% to 11%, compared to the 0.5% offered by traditional bank savings accounts.

  • Global Card Acceptance: Debit cards issued by these platforms work at approximately 150 million merchant locations worldwide.

  • Self-Custody Protection: In self-custodial models, even if the platform’s card operations fail, users retain full control of their underlying crypto assets.

  • Chain Abstraction: Users never interact with gas fees, bridge interfaces, or network selectors. The blockchain becomes invisible.

  • Stablecoin Integration: Direct stablecoin holdings within the app enable cross-border payments and access to on-chain asset services without leaving the platform.

Regulatory Landscape and Compliance Challenges

No analysis of the crypto neobank sector would be complete without addressing regulation. The licensing environment has become both more demanding and more navigable, creating a complex landscape that platforms must master.

Since October 2025, Google Play has required developers to hold government licensing to distribute custodial crypto apps in 17 jurisdictions, including the United States, European Union, United Kingdom, Japan, and several others. Non-custodial wallets are explicitly out of scope, which means the custody decision is not only a legal one but also an app-store distribution one.

The regulatory catalyst that will determine the sector’s economics over the next twelve months is the race for banking charters. Revolut filed for a US national bank charter in March 2026, with stablecoins named as a day-one product. Nubank and Crypto.com both secured conditional OCC approval, while Coinbase applied for a US national trust charter. The playbook involves either securing licenses like the EU’s MiCA framework or partnering with chartered banks to offer FDIC-like insurance for cash holdings.

For platforms operating in emerging markets, the regulatory picture varies considerably. Indonesia, for example, regulates crypto asset trading through Bappebti with evolving OJK involvement for broader financial services. Neobanks in the region must comply with KYC/AML regulations and ensure secure customer data management.

Risks and Challenges Facing the Titans

Despite the optimistic growth narrative, the onchain neobank sector faces genuine risks that could reshape the competitive landscape. These challenges are not hypothetical; they are active concerns that platform operators and investors monitor daily.

  • Unsustainable Yield Subsidies: The high yields offered by many platforms some reaching 11% may not be sustainable over the long term if underlying DeFi protocol returns decline. Platforms subsidizing yields to attract users will eventually face a reckoning.

  • Regulatory Uncertainty: While the regulatory environment has clarified in some jurisdictions, significant uncertainty remains. Platforms operating across multiple jurisdictions must navigate a patchwork of rules that may conflict or change without warning.

  • Privacy Concerns: A crypto neobank operating on a public chain may expose too much transaction data that can be linked to real entities. Balancing transparency with user privacy remains an unresolved tension.

  • Competition from Incumbents: MetaMask and other established wallet providers represent a significant competitive threat. Their existing user bases and brand recognition give them distribution advantages that new entrants cannot easily replicate.

  • Platform Failure Risk: In custodial models, platform failure could leave users unable to access funds. Even in self-custodial models, operational failures at the card or account level can disrupt user access to their assets.

The Path Forward: Who Will Become the Alipay of Crypto?

The central question driving competition in 2026 is which platform will achieve the kind of ubiquitous adoption that Alipay achieved in China’s mobile payment revolution. The answer will depend on how each titan addresses its unique strengths and vulnerabilities.

Tria is poised for massive mainstream adoption due to its UX-first approach. By making the blockchain entirely invisible, it removes the primary barrier that has kept average users out of crypto. Veera is positioned for emerging market dominance, with its 4 million users across 108 countries representing a beachhead in regions where traditional banking has failed. Superform is best positioned for sustainable institutional growth, with its automated vault strategies offering a more conservative but potentially more durable value proposition.

However, the battle is far from settled. The sector’s evolution will be shaped by several forces that extend beyond the three titans. Ether.fi, with its enormous TVL and DeFi-native card offering, represents a potential acquisition target for Coinbase, Kraken, or a traditional bank seeking entry into the space. Plasma One, built on a purpose-built stablecoin chain with a Tether relationship and zero-fee USDT transfers, offers a compelling alternative model. And UR, built on Mantle Network and backed by Bybit’s distribution infrastructure, combines virtual Swiss IBAN accounts with a Mastercard debit card, creating a hybrid model that bridges traditional banking infrastructure with crypto-native capabilities.

The convergence of neobanks with PayFi and blockchain-based services is a defining trend of 2026. As more neobanks explore stablecoin payment integration, on-chain value transfer, and access to DeFi services within their platforms, the line between digital banking and decentralized finance will continue to blur. This convergence reflects a broader shift toward a more open and composable financial architecture one in which users can move seamlessly between fiat and crypto, between traditional savings and DeFi yield, and between local and global payment networks.

The titans battling for dominance in this space are not merely competing for market share. They are competing to define the fundamental architecture of money flow for the next decade. The winner will be the platform that best resolves the tension between user control and ease of use, between regulatory compliance and permissionless innovation, and between crypto-native functionality and mainstream appeal. The stakes could not be higher.
